To tell you the truth I probably am not the most open-minded person when it comes to the Twilight Saga, not being a fan of presenting obsession as a depiction of love. I had extremely low expectations of the New Moon movie and it flabbergasts me how I being dragged along on a family outing to watch it today, am disappointed.

As what seems to be the case of many movies nowadays the trailers for New Moon were the best parts of the film.
OK i need to clear my head and comeback and write a PROPER REVIEW...

I'm back again writing Panoptic-Ent's second post of 2009 within hours
of each other. I guess once you start you don't stop, plus I wanted
to try out mobile uploads to blogspot. So several things on my mind
right now in terms of entertainment. Firstly, the arrival of Mariah
Carey (Cannon)s 12th LP Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel due out on the
25th of August. Her single Obsessed is already heating up the airwaves
and stirring controversy as it is said to be a comeback to Eminem's
Bagpipes from Baghdad a track on his recently released Relapse album.
Next I am in eager anticipation of the sixth installment inthe Harry
Potter series - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - which will
finally hit theaters on July 15th after it's disappointing push back
last year.
Finally I must speak of the recently released Monuments and Melodies
greatest hits album by Incubus. I believe that is a definite must get
album for the summer almost as much as getting MJ albums is going to
be. The album features their new single Black Heart Inertia. Incubus
is a true inspiration to me actually I should admit that my love for
their song Anna Molly is partial inspiration for my alias.
With this I bid my adieu for the night. I'm thinking that
maybe, for now, at least I will be a bit more casual in my postings and
definitely more frequent feel free to buzz all two people who'll
probably read this:)

Death Of An Icon

It is with much sadness that Panoptic-Ent returns from hiatus. Though unplanned there is no way a day such as this could pass without at least me, Kay Anomaly, a true fanatic of culture and the entire entertainment experience writing on Panoptic-Ent. Indeed by now the news has reached every corner of the globe that the one and only, the great King of Pop, Michael Jackson has died at the age of 50 leaving behind 3 kids and ofcourse a lot of famous family and diehard fans. He suffered a sudden cardiac arrest earlier today at his home in Los Angeles and was to to the UCLA hospital. I can only tell u my feelings as I watched this unfold today on the news. I was absolutely in shock and as my thoughts don't often go to Michael Jackson it was surprising to me how much I felt this loss. For as a true and diehard fan of MUSIC there is no denying his greatness. Michael Jackson was one of if not the greatest performer to walk this Earth and we will never see someone like him again. In reflection at this time all his quirks and ecclecticness seem to be things to treasure part what made him the man he was. He suffered alot, I think we forget that a lot of times when we talk about him but I hope we remember him for the extent of his reach, the barriers he broke down, his humanitarianism, Thriller :). My grandparents love him, my parents love him, I love him and I know someday my kids will too. I hope we all pause and reflect on the Death of an Icon...

VMAs Rock The Back Lot

The MTV VMA awards took place at Paramount studios tonight and were indeed spectacular with dazzling performances staged to be as vivid and wonderful as music videos and presenters such as Demi Moore, Michael Phelps, Ciara, Lindsey Lohan,Slipknot, Slash,Paris Hilton, Kobe Bryant and of course Britney Spears. Speaking of Britney Spears she was the heavy hitter of the night taking home 3 VMAs which is great considering she has failed to receive this reward sixteen times before. Here is a list of the nights awardees:

VMA Dance Battle - Fanny Pak The VMA performances were definitely unforgettable with Lil Wayne performing with Leona Lewis, T-Pain and Kid Rock. Also T.I. performed with Rihanna, Katy Perry dazzled the VMA stage with a performance of Like A Virgin and the smash hit I Kissed A Girl, and Kanye West closed the show literal with song. Christina Aguilera and Pink's performances were thrilling with luscious harmony and gutsy dance moves. The host of the evening was Russell Brand who may have been a bit too forward to be considered as funny but was definitely entertaining to watch. However his mouth may have gotten him in trouble after he suggested that it was not worthwhile for the Jonas Brothers to be chaste. Jordin Sparks when presenting spoke out against his comments as did Perez HIlton after the show. As for the awards, well you tell me, I still cannot get over Britney's three wins. I believe the most closely contested award was the Best Rock video VMA which had nominees such as Slipknot, Fall Out Boy, Paramore and of course the winners Linkin Park. Definitely one of the more pleasant 'upsets' of the night (for me anyway) was that the German band Tokio Hotel took Best New Artiste from contenders Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Jordin Sparks and Taylor Swift.
If you haven't watched it yet you missed out on something, though I guess you'll get a chance to watch it as I sense many reruns in MTVs future, like the one going one as I type...gotta run i'm gonna watch the VMAs again!!!

What's New? : Katy, Shwayze, The Verve, Slip-knot

The summer is almost over but music is as hot as ever. So let's talk some alternative, metal, hip-hop and rock shall we.
The Verve is back with their new single Love is Noise and a new album titled Forth set to be released on August 25th. Most will remember them for their spectacular worldwide hit 1997's Bittersweet Symphony (sampled by Kanye West and Madonna and covered by many acts including Moby and One Republic) and the poetic Sonnet which have to be two of the most melodious and wonderful tracks ever produced, or even more recently from the 2005 Live 8 benefit concert's where they performed with Coldplay (Youtube the performance it's really beautiful to see). Chris Martin (Coldplay) describes Richard Ashcroft (The Verve) as "the best singer in the world" and Bittersweet Symphony as one of the "best songs ever written". If you have never heard of the Verve well now is the time to check them out. Love is Noise is a catchy tune that speaks definitively of some of the downsides love represents and has a fantastically done video. The Verve definitely does not disappoint and only leaves us anxious for the rest of the Forth album.
Another group that's back and as wonderful as ever is Slipknot. Now most of us will remember them as heavy and hard-core, the real deal when it comes to hard rock. The always masked Grammy award winning group is back after four years with a new album All Hope is Gone set for release on Aug 26. They released their first track Psychosocial, debuting the video on FNMTV a couple weeks ago. The video is definitely not for the faint of heart but if you are a true maggot (Slipknot fan) and even if you are not you can appreciate the song. Corey Taylor gives us a more melodious side of Slipknot with a heartfelt chorus that even if you are frightened you cannot help but sing along and feel the song. Who knows, after one listen you may even find affection in being called "maggot"?
Moving on from the seasoned veterans let's look on some newbies. Shwayze right now is known as a duo of Aaron Lewis aka Shwayze and his bestfriend/producer Cisco Adler of Whitestarr. Shwayze is a rapper that hails from the "mean streets" of Malibu living in what he claims is the only trailer park in Malibu. You can check out Shwayze on Buzzin' a reality show on MTV that follows him on his comedic and interesting journey to putting out his self-titled debut album. Buzzin' is also the name of the lead single off his album which is one of many tracks that are a soothing mix of hip-hop and Cisco's alternative rock style. Shwayze's latest is Corona and Lime which debuted at 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The song speaks of a girl like me who "loves hip hop and rock & roll", fans of both genres should give Shwayze's tracks a listen. Corona and Lime is a nice and easy summer tune, it's not all about soul and what's in your heart, it's just a fun song to listen to when you want to kick back with a Corona and lime.
Finally who can talk about summer and new music and not mention the talented Katy Perry who had us all singing along to the playful and seemingly risque I Kissed A Girl. If you don't know her she played Travis McCoy's girlfriend (which is now her real life role) in the most recent video for the smash hit Cupid's Chokehold by Gym Class Heroes. For almost as long as there was summer there was Katy Perry at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for an impressive 7 week stretch. I Kissed A Girl generated much buzz, which wasn't all good with even her parents, who are pastors, are rumoured to disapprove, but really sometimes if you don't want to hear a song you should just turn it off and not spoil it for the rest of us who can appreciate it. Her album One of the Boys is a definite must get. I recommend Hot N Cold and Self-inflicted as must listen tracks. Hot N Cold playfully speaks of a boyfriend who just seems to be split into two, changing his mind "like a girl changes her clothes"; Self Inflicted is a little more on the soulful side speaking of a love she can't let go but yet one that hurts, "Baby you are the weapon I choose these wounds are self-inflicted". The theme may seem a bit cliché but sometimes cliché is just the truth, so go out and get the album if you haven't yet and give the song a listen. Also if you haven't yet and aren't too easily offended then you may want to check out Ur So Gay another track on her album attracting controversy because it is deemed as homophobic, or as hating on emo guys. Give it a listen and maybe get back at me with what you think.
This was my little mix of the old and the new. Let's show these artistes some love, go out there listen to some new songs and add them to your end of summer play lists and head out to face the rest of the year!!!

THE JAMAICAN SWEEP

Jamaica now officially has the fastest human beings walking this Earth. On the heels of Bolt's impressive victory yesterday at the Bird's Nest the Jamaican women bolted their way to a sweep of the Olympic 100m women's finals. Shelly-ann Fraser, the seeming underdog, lead the group of her teammates Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart to a gold, silver and silver , clocking an impressive personal best of 10.78s beating out her teammates who both came in at 10.98s after a review of their photo-finish. The last sweep of both Olympic 100m finals occurred in 1912. Further Fraser one in fine style with this being the widest margin of victory in this final since 1988 when Florence Griffith-Joyner set that elusive world record of 10.49s.
Shelly-ann Fraser was most ecstatic telling reporters,

"I can't believe I actually won. Nobody expected me to win, so there was no pressure"

Fraser said it was a great feeling to cross the line to see both her teammates beside her, all recognizing that they has just created history.Before this weekend Jamaica had never won a gold in the 100m finals and now they have taken the top spot for both men and women. Stewart said,

"It's about time, we've been waiting for this, so many great athletes have come so close and we were able to pull it off tonight"

Of course the American's which placed fourth, fifth and last in the 100m final did not take defeat lying down. Team USA appealed the results citing that one of their own, Torrey Edwards had false-started. The appeal was quickly rejected by the International Association of Athletics Federation. The appeal however has resulted in the medal award ceremony being put off till Monday. The Americans also believe that they should at least be awarded a bronze for their efforts, but that also will be a no go. Nothing and noone will steal Jamaica's thunder as they bolt into the rest of the sprint events. All eyes are now on Jamaica as the 200m sprint and 4x100 relays get underway with the Jamaican men and women teams expected to medal and possibly take home the gold!!!

BOLT STRIKES THE BIRD's NEST IN BEIJING

So I know I'm breaking music's reign over the entertainment page, but for one of the best reasons possible. In one of the greatest moments in both entertainment and Olympic 100m history, Jamaica's Usain Bolt ran a most fantastic 9.69s to break his own world record and win Jamaica's first gold in history in the Olympic 100m men's at the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing, China.

The race was unbelievable with Jamaica's Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt both expected to medal as the world's two fastest men. The starter sounded and the men were off with Bolt starting slow and taking the lead 50m in. At 80m he started his celebration looking to both his sides and realizing he had already won with the rest of the back at least a body length behind. Usain crossed the finish line upright making winning this event seem so effortless and easy. Bolt ran around the track in celebration embracing his mother and fans, reggae music blazing through the air. Jamaican's all across the world celebrated this epic moment, some of us even laughing at the way Bolt chose to finish such a spectacular race, some of us wondering if he is even human but all of us proud of Usain. When asked why he eased up at the end Bolt said,

"I didn't come here to run the world record, because I was the world record-holder. I came here to win."

As he said earlier this year when he first made the world record "Records can be broken, Olympic gold's last forever". And win he did, with fellow Jamaican's Powell coming fifth and Michael Frater running a personal best of 9.97 to come in sixth.

When asked about Bolt's performance Powell said,

"Usain was spectacular. He was definitely untouchable tonight. He could have gone a lot faster if he had run straight through the line."

This entire race in itself being spectacular as it is the first time 6 men have run under 10 seconds at the Olympic games. At this rate it is now speculated that Usain will eventually run under 9.60s, possibly in this very year.

What's next for Usain? The 200m and the 4x100m relay. Bolt has said that the 200m is his event and is the favorite for the 200m finals and possibly may become the first sprinter to take both events at the Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1988. Let's all cross our fingers and possibly he may be coming home with 3 gold medals for Jamaica.

Dementedly sexy, thematically ingenious and crazy but cleverly concocted. The fore mentioned can only be referring to Rihanna's lastest video for the hit single Disturbia. The synthpop dance song was written by Andre Merritt, Chris Brown and Robert Allen, but the unquestionable creative brilliance of the video is attributed to Anthony Mandler and Rihanna who directed and co-directed respectively.

Dementia and confusion are the prevalent themes in the song Disturbia. The song overtures with the catchy lines "bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum", which is vaguely reminiscent of Eiffel 65's hit song Blue (Da Ba De), it then continues with respectable lyrics about faded pictures and unbearable life thoughts. But enough about the song, irrespective of how great it is, which shows in its Billboard performance.

The video is what elevates the song beyond its limits and possibly transcends the VMA awarded video for Umbrella. Anthony manages to capture the precise amount of demetia and confusion with a little dash of sexy within the video without going overboard. From the mistress of the madhouse in the spinning chair to the encaged crazy blonde and the weird dancers with their staccato like movements, this video exudes brilliance and is unlike anything Rihanna has ever done. However, I must candidly say I do have one tiny regret about this video, I would have loved to have seen more choreogrophy from the said dancers, I was not expecting a "Thriller" but the song after all is a dance song. Irrespective of that minor miss the video is phenomenal and should be awarded accordingly.

Platinum is apparently not enough for the bajan sensation Robyn Rihanna Fenty. Irrespective of Rihanna's huge success from her last album Good Girl Gone Bad, she is still hungry for more. Never mind the fact that the said album has gone platinum in the USA, double platinum in the UK and triple platinum in Canada, the green eyed songstress has decided to re-release the fore-mentioned album, due in stores May 27.

In order to ensure success, Rihanna has once again teamed up with her label mate Ne-Yo and Stargate, who wrote and produced the new single "Take A Bow" respectively. This keyboard driven mid-tempo track is a shove off to a past lover; it utilizes sarcasm and a metaphoric comparison to a theater performance. Rihanna repeatedly praises her ex, "a standing ovation...very entertaining...go on and take a bow", for cheating.

Though Take a Bow indubitably pales in comparison to Umbrella, which reportedly sold 1.5 million units on iTunes, you may find yourself rocking and singing along after the second listen. One thing for sure is that Rihanna is here to stay and promises to rock the pop world for years to come.

Don't Wake Me from This Beautiful Nightmare

Once again the mezzo-soprano diva Beyoncé Knowles has delivered another hit. With the futuristic/techno sounds you would expect from Timbaland and B's melodious vocals, "Beautiful Nightmare" promises to be a hit. The song is rumored to be her first single off of her upcoming third solo album. The hypnotic beat coerces you to nod your head and move your shoulders while the lyrics reach out and take hold; as you are reminded of that special someone who has you so sprung that you can't even tell if it's "sweet dreams or beautiful nightmares," but then again you don't care just as long as you have them.

Though one cannot say unequivocally that this song was produced by Timbaland it sorta reeks of his midas touch. Moreover, he is said to be a producer on the said album due out later this year. With such a magnificent combination we can all expect another chart topping album from the ever sensational Beyoncé.

E=MC²: NOT JUST PHYSICS

It is the eve of the release of Mariah Carey's 11th LP E=MC² and what can one feel but happiness to have Mimi back. It has been three years since her astounding comeback with the magnanimous Emancipation of Mimi album and again she is showing us her ability to compete and win in this evolving and increasingly paltry music world (whether you look at that as a compliment is entirely up to you).

Carey's first single off her new album is "every geeks dream" the playful and flirty Touch My Body. On April 3rd this single became her 18th number one single on the Billboard Top 100 making the songstress the artiste with the second most number ones in history surpassing Elvis Presley and just two number ones away from tying with The Beatles. This is indeed an accomplishment of which all Mariah fans are proud, the question now becomes when and not if Carey will surpass the Beatles and become the biggest hit-maker ever to walk the planet. It is with eagerness that we await her next few singles - to see if E=MC² will usher in the era of a new number one single holder on the charts. E=MC² features collaborations with Jermaine Dupri, Junior Gong (Damian Marley), Young Jeezy and of course T-Pain (kinda cliche isn't he?).

Carey says that E=MC² stands for the Emancipation of Mimi squared, speaking to her surpassing her previous album in further pursuit of freedom. Although dissociating it from Einstein's theory of relativity, I must say, MC does represent Energy in ways Einstein could only dream. MC is a musical elitist representing excitement and epic entertainment. Her vocal range and soulful tunes have an indelible mark on music and will continue to move us for years to come.

It has been four years and finally Usher Raymond IV is back. After the unprecedented success of the Confessions' album one wonders if Usher will ever be able to produce another album of that calibre. His first single off his fifth LP (Here I Stand) titled Love In This Club featuring Young Jeezy is already breaking records, being the third highest gainer to number 1 in Billboard Chart's History. The song jumped 50 spots to take the number 1 position on the Billboard Top 100 Singles chart on March 15, 2008. The song is currently ranked number 5 on the Billboard charts.

The "Love In This Club" music video premiered earlier this week featuring appearances by Polow Da Don (the producer of the track), Keri Hilson (as Usher's love interest), Diddy, Robin Thicke and Kanye West. The video, Usher stated on Bet's 106 & Park on April 8th, is "a prelude of what is to come",with his album Here I Stand to tell his story from being a player to being in a relationship and trying to make that relationship work.

The video itself is not particularly spectacular. In fact for a song that talks about wanting to "make love in this club" the video is completely tame, not that I am an advocate for "loose" videos. However the video does leave the viewer wondering what will happen next...partially because enough hasn't happened yet. Usher jokingly warned all the listeners to this song, especially in the club, that he isn't responsible for what this song might make you feel like doing right there on the dance floor. So if you really feeling the love in this club remember to use protection!
